About Hypnosis
Some simple Facts
Healing by trance state has been acknowledged for centuries and has been observed, in one form or another, in virtually every culture throughout the world. However, the term "hypnosis" (from the Greek "hypnos", meaning "sleep") was only coined around 1840 and remains a somewhat less than accurate description of the experience as, in most respects, the hypnotic state is entirely dissimilar to sleep. At our current level of knowledge, the phenomenon cannot be conclusively defined but perhaps a reasonable interim definition might be that: "Hypnosis is a state of mind, enhanced by (although not exclusively) mental and physical relaxation, in which our subconscious is able to communicate with our conscious mind". This state of mind may be brought about either by oneself unaided (self-hypnosis) or with the help of another person. If this other person is a trained professional, who utilises the resultant state to encourage beneficial change to occur, the process is referred to as "Hypnotherapy" William Broom GHSC
What Hypnosis can and can't do.
Over the years that hypnosis has been used as a therapy a number of claims have been made that are purely speculative, having no basis in reality. Trained professional therapists steer well clear of these often ridiculous claims. Remember that the skill of anyone who uses hypnosis is in the construction and application of suggestion. Suggestion used beneficially by a skilled and ethical therapist will bring about positive change for good. Sadly the public perception of hypnosis and hypnotherapy is still being soured by poorly trained and inexperienced hypnotists who insist on making outlandish claims for their art. Hypnosis will not give you psychic powers, make your breasts larger or make you taller. However hypnotherapy will help you overcome a fear or phobia, stop smoking, manage your weight, control pain, manage depression and improve performance. Howard Davies 2005
Hypnosis the by-pass of the critical factor of the conscious mind (a persons analytical and judgmental ability) followed by the establishment of acceptable selective thinking.
