About Hypnosis

Modern Clinical Hypnosis is a safe and effective way of bringing about personal change. Whether it be to stop smoking, manage weight, boost confidence or deal with a fear of phobia. Hypnosis when used properly can aid you to make the changes in your life that you wish to make. Most people are curious about hypnosis, even if they are sceptical or dismissive. Today more than at any other time people are seeking safe and effective treatments for their problems.

Real hypnosis is just that, the old myths and misunderstanding are gradually being eroded, and being replaced by a sound scientific understanding of the phenomena. We now know that hypnosis is a natural response of the mind and body that can be induced deliberately. If you have experienced real hypnosis before then the process can be accelerated. However for many this will be their first experience and as such I will be very aware of expectations. I tailor each and every session to meet the needs of the individual, however the basic process is as follows.

I use modern hypnotic inductions (no swinging watches are used). These inductions are relaxing and efficient and allow more time to help you to attain your goals. There is no longer any need to spend hours in therapy, modern hypnotherapy is a form of brief therapy. Each session includes an induction of hypnosis and the therapy required. This can often be completed in under 30 minutes.

Although it is true to say that the effect of a session is often immediate, changes usually become more apparent and stronger over time and are re-enforced by repetition. Which is why I recommend you attend for at least three sessions. When your mind and body are safely and comfortably in a calm state of focused attention (hypnosis), your unconscious mind becomes receptive to new ideas. If appropriate, deeper explorations can be made using Hypnoanalysis and/or regression techniques. (I am also a qualified Hypnoanalysist)

The beneficial ideas and suggestions that are used in your session will have been carefully prepared to address the specific issues that you have brought to therapy. When applied in hypnosis, they are easily absorbed and acted upon by your inner mind. At the end of the session you will be guided back into normal waking consciousness feeling refreshed and alert. Knowing that the process of change is taking place at an unconscious level.

Although it is true to say that the effect of a session is often immediate, changes usually become more apparent and stronger over time and are re-enforced by repetition. All sessions are conducted in accordance with the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council and International Certification Board of Clinical Hypnosis guidelines and codes of ethics.

A Simple Guide

Hypnosis itself has for decades been subject to a great deal of research, and is now widely accepted as a recognisable scientific phenomena. Hypnosis received official recognition by the medical establishment (British and American Medical Associations) as being a valid treatment as far back as the 1950's.

One common misconception that many people have about hypnosis is, that hypnosis requires a loss of all awareness, that it is like being asleep or unconscious. In fact most individuals actually experience a heightened and concentrated awareness, perhaps we could use the term focused awareness. It is as if we can become fully absorbed and attentive to such a degree that anything that happens in our external world becomes less important.

There is nothing mystical or occult about hypnosis, though some would have you believe so. Hypnotherapy and hypnosis are simply about your responses to suggestions. When you respond to the hypnotist's suggestions to focus your mind and attention, the emotional system calms and becomes even more receptive. Suggestions for deep relaxation when carefully phrased, worded and repeated can bring about a trance state, building a deeper rapport and further increasing responsiveness. Allow yourself to co-operate and comply with these suggestions you will experience the benefits of hypnosis.

The skill of the hypnotist lies in the construction and delivery of the suggestions. Hypnotherapy is one way of harnessing suggestion to illicit responses, and these responses allow us to make the changes in our lives that we wish to make. Individual experience depends on the nature of, and compliance with the suggestions. Often a deep and profound relaxation is experienced because suggestions are structured to illicit that response. As more compliant responses are forthcoming further suggestions are more easily accepted and acted upon. Most people find hypnosis to be an extremely pleasant experience, because it tends to produce feelings of deep calm and relaxation. However please be aware that 'there is no such thing as a hypnotised feeling, each individual will experience hypnosis in their own unique way.'
