About Hypnosis
Dr Maxwell Maltz was a successful plastic surgeon based in New York. He found that although he could change his patients' physical appearance they may still feel bad about their appearance for psychological reasons; they were also in need of a "psychological facelift. "Dr Maltz popularised the term "self-image" to describe this inner face. In 1960 he published the book Psycho-Cybernetics in which he introduced his analogy of the brain as a cybernetic "servo-mechanism", like the computer on a guided missile, designed to automatically find a path to the target (self-image) it is programmed with.
This image that governs our lives develops out of our experiences as we grow; it includes our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. Where the image is vague and ill defined it can cause a lack of confidence and low self esteem, a feeling of "I don't know who I am". Perhaps others develop a self image that although strong and clear it still imprisons them in a cycle of self destructive bahaviour and damaged relationships whilst holding the belief that "that's just the way I am"The "self-Image is the key to our thinking, our feelings and our behaviours.
Change the self-image and you change the thinking, feeling and behaviour. The self image is a mental picture that each and every person develops and carries of themselves it sets the boundaries of individual accomplishment. In simple terms it defines what you can or cannot do.Self-Image=Direction and goal Your self-image fundamentally provides your mind with direction. The self image can be good or bad, helpful or unhelpful. If the image is based on predominantly negative past events and failures then the direction becomes a viciously circular programme. Resulting in "It's just the way I am"
If the self image is based on positive, beneficial images the success mechanism responds to the image taking the thinking feeling and behaviour in a positive direction. Resulting in "I am who I choose to be"
Self-image is the key to human personality and behaviour.
Psycho-Cybernetics helps
Dr Maltz book was highly innovative at the time and remains one of the most influential texts on the subject of self-image psychology and goal visualisation.
