Stage Fright and Performance Anxiety

About Hypnosis

Perhaps we all suffer from ‘stage fright at some time in our life, whether it be standing up in front of the class full of pupils, a wedding speech, the business presentation or even a job interview.

For some being able to stand up in front of others and perform is a career choice. Actors and actresses singers and celebrities know that they need to project a positive confident self image.

However nerves (as it is sometimes called) can sometimes get the better of even the most seasoned performer. Once the imagination (so prevalent in creative types) takes hold in a negative way, performance suffers. Memory and concentration dissolve, lines are forgotten and even planned and rehearsed actions seem to disappear as stage fright freezes the performer.

This kind or performance anxiety may begin with negative ‘what if’ imaginings and thinking but the resulting physical manifestations are just as distressing and inhibiting, dry mouth, unable to speak, heart pounding, breathing labouring to name but a few.

The most common reasons for Stage fright appear to be:-

  • A fear of rejection.
  • Feeling judged by significant others. Either perceiving or even imagining a negative judgement
  • Imagining the possibility of failure at a task, and the resulting in embarrassment.
  • Making an absolute demand on one’s self to be perfect.
  • Self doubts about ability to perform well. Lack of self belief.
  • Focusing on own behaviour and appearance rather than the performance.
  • Intrusive memories of a past failure.

There are probably many, many more, however most have their roots in the ‘Self Image’ that picture of ourselves that we carry around that determines what we can or cannot do. I am very aware that every person I work with is a unique individual with their own personal story and history.

So how to deal with ‘Stage Fright’ or ‘Performance Anxiety’
Modern Hypnosis techniques offer a safe and effective way of helping the performer to gain or regain control of their thinking and feeling and in doing so control and direct their behaviours. When we combine hypnosis with Self Image Psychology we have a simple but effective tool to help overcome those performance nerves! Learning to control and guide the imagination in a positive directed way compels you towards positive performance. Not just ‘getting through’ but enjoying and enhancing your performance.

As with all hypnotherapy the number of sessions required varies from person to person. Although it is true to say that 'Stage Fright and 'Performance Anxiety' often only require one or two sessions, I consider it to be good practice to provide at least three sessions. This is because each person is a unique individual with their own personal history, therefore I treat each person as an individual and each session is tailored to meet individual need.

Howard Davies 2011

Even the most seasoned, well trained, rehearsed performer encounters a situation where despite being able to reason and think logically about their performance they still become overwhelmed by a feeling of fear.
You don't have to let the nerves hold you back!
